Home again

Christmas and our holiday passed quick and we arrived back home yesterday evening, safe and sound. As usual the first thing I did was to unpack. Call me crazy (my boyfriend does) but I can not relax until that is done. Today we have been busy doing laundry, tucking away suitcases, finding places for our new "treasures" etc. No time to sit still. I will return with more pictures and holiday stories next week. Have a nice evening!

The night before Christmas

'Twas the night before Christmas
when all through the house,
not a creature was stirring,
not even a mouse.

The stockings were hung
by the chimney with care,
in the hopes that St. Nicholas
soon would be there.

The children were nestled
all snug in their beds,
while visions of sugarplums
danced in their heads.

When out on the lawn
there arose such a clatter,
I sprung from my bed to see
what was the matter.

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
but a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer.
I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight,
Happy Christmas to all,
and to all a good night!

Clement Moore (1779-1863)

Hyvää ja rauhallista Joulua teille kaikille!

Holiday updates / Lomajuttuja

So far our holiday in Finland has gone ok. No snow though and I am afraid they are not promising any snow for Christmas either. What a bummer I say. We were so hoping to have a proper white Christmas this time, instead of just dreaming of one. But there is still some hope!

First couple of days we spent in Helsinki, seeing relatives, shopping at Christmas markets etc. We arrived to my hometown Kotka yesterday evening and were so knackered we slept over ten hours last night! Mind you, it is so dark outside we feel we could hybernate like bears for couple of weeks. But I better start wrapping Christmas presents now as I do not want to leave it to the last moment...

Ja sitten sillä paremmalla kotimaisella. Toistaiseksi loma Suomessa on sujunut ok.

Christmas magic

The other evening I lit the candles, took a glass of wine and sat on the couch listening to my favourite Christmas songs by Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. Dreaming of that white Christmas. At first my partner tried to object, saying it is not Christmas yet, but there was no stopping me. While I was sitting there, humming happily along with the music, he smiled and shook his head asking; "What is it with you and Christmas?".

I honestly do not know why I like Christmas so much. There has always been something magical and enchanting about it. Might be it comes from the childhood, when one still believed in Santa Claus and elves and was convinced Santa could make reindeer fly. When one heard stories of the three wise men, guided by the star of Bethlehem. Christmas lights twinkling everywhere and the wonderful scent of the Christmas tree when it was brought in and the thrill of decorating it (it still thrills me). The list is long.

All those lovely memories, stories and traditions still make Christmas sparkle. Some of that old magic still remains, at least for me. Hopefully for you too :-)

Taas pienet tontut liikkuu

"Taas pienet tontut liikkuu
ja muistiin merkitsee,
niin joulupukki tietää saa
kuka lahjat ansaitsee..."

Lopuksi toivottelen kaikille suomalaisille oikein hyvää Itsenäisyyspäivää.

Tunnelman hakua

Ensimmäinen joulukalenterin luukku on avattu. En malttanut odottaa pidempään, vaan olen jo pikkuhiljaa alkanut koristelemaan kotiamme joulua varten. Vaikka vietämmekin varsinaisen joulun Suomessa, haluan silti luoda pientä tunnelmaa täälläkin päässä. Eihän tällaista jouluihmistä pysäytä mikään. Enkelikynttilänjalat ja Pentikin pikkuporot kaivan aina ensimmäisinä esille, niiden mukana alkaa joulunodotus.

Vaihtelin myös hieman taulujen paikkoja. Alla oikealla oleva taulu on hollantilaisen Nico Bruynesteynin asetelma.
Tässä lopuksi toivottelen erittäin mukavaa viikon jatkoa teille kaikille :-) And so the countdown to Christmas has started. I could not wait any longer and I have slowly started to decorate our home for Christmas. Even though we spend this Christmas in Finland, I still want to have some Christmas atmosphere at this end. There is no stopping me. Angel candlesticks and small reindeers by Pentik are the first ones to come out, they start the festive season.

I also moved some paintings around. The still life by a Dutch artist Nico Bruynestyn moved from the upstairs' landing to the living room and it fits its new spot very well indeed. We inherited the painting from my partner's granny and I like it very much.

We have made small changes in our living room again and this time on my partner's request. He took a fancy to Ektorp's Jennylund chair and insisted on having one, so we sold the old dark brown leather chair and made a trip to Ikea. The new chair arrived couple of weeks ago and the whole room looks lighter and brighter now. A bad thing is my partner already managed to spill some red wine on the white cover, but a good thing is new covers are easy and cheap to get :-)

Lopuksi toivottelen oikein hyvää loppuviikkoa teille kaikille!
Pari näkymää Haarlemista

A week passed very quick. One of my best friends was visiting us and we kept ourselves rather busy. She arrived on last Friday and earlier today I took her back to Schiphol airport and her plane is on its way back to Finland, if not landed already. It was such a nice week, but now I am quite knackered. We indulged ourselves food- and drinkwise and also shopped until we (or at least I) almost dropped. We went to Amsterdam, Haarlem and Leiden, and of course I also showed her our tiny hometown.

Even the weather was not too bad. We had hardly any rain, so can not complain. Like I said, we shopped a lot. My friend's suitcase was so full she barely managed to close it. She had 7 kilos of excess weight and the airline charged her 80 euros for it. A pretty hefty price per kilo if I may say so, but here's hoping it was worth it :-)
A view from Haarlem

But now I need to go and rest a bit and gather my strength again. Tonight I can just relax, but tomorrow I have to start preparing for Saturday when we have guests again, but this time only for the day and the evening. Wishing you all a lovely weekend!

Odottelen kovasti huomista perjantaita jolloin yksi parhaimmista ystävistäni saapuu luoksemme melkein viikon vierailulle. Tämä on hänen 1. kertansa Alankomaissa, joten näytettävää riittää. Toivottavasti säät suosivat meitä, mutta tuli mitä tuli (vaikka pikku-ukkoja taivaalta), emme anna sen haitata menoa. Odotettavissa on todella kiva viikko :-)
Few pictures from our blue hued bedroom. The small pretty artwork we bought from Finland last summer finally found its spot from the bedroom wall. Finding a spot for it took some time. That is what you get when you hoard too much stuff... at some point you run out of space. I might not be the worst hoarder in town, but I have to admit I am pretty good at it.

Splash of red

Our living and dining rooms may be toned down colourwise, but red is still one of my favourite colours. The darker the better. Here are few pictures from our staircase and upstairs small landing (well, everything is small in this house). Especially the landing has a wee bit oriental theme going on, spiced up with red of course. By the way, the Chinese cabinet is much darker red in real life. The striking red and black painting shown below is by my father-in-law. I remember when I saw it for the first time couple of years ago. I got smitten right away and the next moment he just gave it to me! I have to say this picture does not do it justice as you cannot see the beautiful texture it has. One of my favourite pieces.
Wishing you all a lovely weekend!

Autumn glory?

It has been such a dark, dull and depressing weather today. In general I do not mind Autumn, but on a day like this... eugh. After I got up this morning I was sitting in semi darkness with a cup of tea and feeling quite blaah. But then I decided to make the most of it and lit few candles indoors and on the patio (candles always cheer me up).
Weirdly enough it felt almost like Christmas. I got the urge to dig out some Christmas decorations, but then got back to my senses and realised it is WAY too early. Anyway, not so much Autumn glory today, but perhaps tomorrow the sun will make an appearance again and if not, I will just lit the candles again.

Our Madame...

Our downstairs toilet is crying out for drastic actions. We are planning to redo it completely in a near future and are just waiting for a price quote from a contractor. I hope the quote is not going to make us choke. The sink and the bowl are going to be traditional ones, but otherwise we are planning to go a bit crazy with our loo...

This slightly wacky artwork we found from Helsinki is our starting point. Her name is "Madame Tyytyväinen Tähän Hetkeen" (Madame Satisfied with this Moment) and I find her so adorable. She will definitely get the pride of place on the wall.

Colour wise there will be burgundy, black and some gold. Not for the fainthearted, but we just want to have some FUN with that tiny space. No worries, we will try to do it in a way that things can be changed back to "normal" with few licks of paint, in case we ever want to sell the house ;-)

Little by little

I have managed to stay clear from colds and flues so far, but it looks like my luck has ran out. First my boyfriend catched some kind of bug and then he kindly passed it on to me. So far only a sore throat, fingers crossed it does not get any worse than this.

As we are more or less stuck at home (and my boyfriend is feeling a bit better already) I asked him to drill few holes on our walls today. We still have loads of artwork and some mirrors that need hanging and I finally want to start sorting them out, little by little. Drilling went ok, although I got slightly worried at one point when I started to hear loud cursing... oh dear.

Our walls are brick and plaster, which makes them very tricky to drill. Occasionally we have had pretty big chunks of plaster falling out, but no disasters this time, phew. Things are not finished yet, so you have to wait for the pictures a little while still.

Busy busy

I have been quite busy during the past week. Have not even had time to do much blogging or should I say ANY blogging. At least we have managed to do some small DIY chores around the house, which is nice, but tonight I was determinate to dedicate little bit of time to my favourite hobby :-)

I will leave you with few snapshots of angel wings, hearts and venus's. Have a good rest of the week.

Walking on sunshine

The weather was gorgeously sunny and warm today. We went for a long(ish) walk and this time I remembered to take a camera with me. Here are some of the shots I took...
Wishing you all a good weekend! Hyvää viikonloppua!

Reading material

All the books I buy these days seem to be either history books or interior design books. They are unquestionably two of my favourite subjects (history was one of my favourite subjects at school already). I am endlessly fashinated by medieval times, Pharaos of Egypt and history of Britain. I am still waiting to tackle several books, including "In Search Of The Knights Templar" and also "Six Wives Of Henry VIII" (been browsing it a lot, but still need to read it from cover to cover) and "Elizabeth I". Ah those Tudors, can not get enough of them.
Even the novels I read are somehow history related. Currently I am reading "The Other Boleyn Girl" by Philippa Gregory and "The Boleyn Inheritance" by the same author is waiting to be read. If the subject interests you I can recommend her books. She mixes historical facts with fiction and really brings the people to live; you can almost see, hear and smell them.

I also loved the BBC series "The Tudors", which second season ended on Friday to the beheading of Anne Boleyn (I told you I can not get enough of Tudors). Watch it if you can, it is very well made and I quite like the casting. Even though you know what is going to happen, it is still exciting. My pile of interior design books is growing rapidly and soon I am running out of space where to store them! But I can not help myself... There are too many great books out there.
